1880s POND YACHT CUTTER
Schooner rigged cutter.
Original wood lined deck, wooden hull and dove tailed lead keel.
Replacement masts, booms, rigging with cotton sails that should
enable sailing in light winds.
Pilot cutters would race each other as only the first to arrive could
'serve a ship'.
They would be crewed by three or four people depending on size.
One sailor at the helm and one or two ship's boys and the pilot. To
reach the incoming merchantman the ship's boys would be launched
in a row boat with the pilot inboard.
