William Francis Burton (1907 – 1995) was born in North Walsham and was a prolific marine and landscape artist, working mainly in oils in and around East Anglia.  He came to prominence in the 1960s when a number of his earlier works were published as prints by Solomon and Whitehead of London.  He was self-taught, spending a year in Australia in the mid-60s.  He died at the age of 88 in Colchester.

Many of Burton’s marine pictures - including this one - have a signature tiny green bottle hidden somewhere within the scene.
